Nearly two decades after he first put Davidson College on the national sports map, Stephen Curry returned to his "forever home" Tuesday to receive an honor that will greet every traveler passing through the town he helped make famous.

During a halftime ceremony at John M. Belk Arena on Dec. 30, officials formally unveiled the renaming of Interstate 77’s Exit 30 as the "Stephen Curry Interchange." The tribute aligns the highway exit number with the iconic No. 30 jersey Curry has worn throughout his storied career with both the Davidson Wildcats and the Golden State Warriors.

"This is my forever home," Curry told a cheering crowd, according to The Charlotte Observer. "For me to be able to represent so many people that made this possible, I hope that that’s what they feel. A diploma is one thing. An elite achievement is another thing. This [sign] is another. I might be stealing the sign to take it home."

Curry was joined by his wife, Ayesha Curry—who drew cheers from the crowd by sporting her husband's college jersey—and several Warriors teammates, including Draymond Green and Moses Moody. The ceremony took place as the Wildcats faced the Duquesne Dukes, eventually falling 89-83 in a double-overtime thriller.

The honor serves as a permanent marker of Curry's impact on the North Carolina town. From 2006 to 2009, Curry transformed the small liberal arts college into a basketball powerhouse, leading the Wildcats to an improbable Elite Eight run in 2008 and becoming the NCAA scoring champion in 2009.

While most alumni remain connected through donations, Curry has taken his commitment to Davidson a step further. Earlier this year, he made history by becoming the assistant general manager of the university’s basketball programs. The move made him the first active professional athlete to hold an official role in NCAA administration.

In this capacity, Curry works alongside fellow alum Matt Berman to oversee the Curry-Berman NIL Fund. The eight-figure endowment is designed to provide "Name, Image, and Likeness" opportunities for student-athletes in both the men's and women's basketball programs, ensuring the school remains competitive in the modern collegiate landscape.

The highway interchange is the latest in a series of honors Davidson has bestowed upon its most famous son. In 2022, after Curry completed his bachelor’s degree in sociology, the school retired his jersey and inducted him into the Davidson Athletics Hall of Fame.

Even as he continues to lead the NBA in three-pointers and chase further championships, Curry’s roots remain firmly planted in the red clay of North Carolina. For the son of Charlotte Hornets legend Dell Curry, the new sign at Exit 30 is more than a landmark—it is a symbol of a family legacy that has come full circle.
