WNBA Star Kara Braxton Dies at 43
Kara Braxton, a two-time WNBA champion and former standout for the University of Georgia, died Saturday following a single-car crash in Cobb County, Georgia, just outside Atlanta. According to the Cobb County Police Department, the 43-year-old was traveling northbound on Interstate 285 near the Cobb Parkway exit when her vehicle struck a concrete median wall on the left shoulder. She was transported to a local hospital where she later died.
The WNBA confirmed the news Sunday in a statement, expressing profound sadness over the passing of the veteran forward. Braxton was selected seventh overall by the Detroit Shock in the 2005 WNBA Draft and earned a spot on the league’s All-Rookie Team that season. She played a key role in the Shock’s championship runs in 2006 and 2008.
In 2007, she was named a WNBA All-Star. Her professional career spanned 10 seasons and included tenures with the Detroit Shock, Tulsa Shock, Phoenix Mercury and New York Liberty. Following the 2008 championship, Braxton was among the players who visited the White House to meet then-President Barack Obama. She finished her professional career in 2014 with career averages of 7.6 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.
Before entering the professional ranks, the 6-foot-6 center-forward played for the University of Georgia from 2001 to 2004. During her time with the Lady Bulldogs, she was named the SEC Freshman of the Year in 2002.
Braxton is survived by her husband, Jarvis Jackson, her twin sister, Kim, and her two sons, Jream Jackson and Jelani Thurman. Jelani Thurman is a college football player who recently transferred to the University of North Carolina after playing tight end at Ohio State.
