[Photo] Students Wear Klu Klux Klan Outfit for US History Class Presentation

A Michigan high school is under fire after a photo of the student went viral.

A Michigan high school is investigating a “highly inappropriate and insensitive” class presentation in which one student dressed as a member of the KKK.

“Welcome to Niles High” was the caption on the Snapchat photo taken inside a classroom Thursday that showed the student dressed in the Klu Klux Klan robe.

The image quickly went viral and caused an uproar about how this presentation was approved by the school.

“The inclusion of these props and costumes was highly inappropriate and insensitive,” a public relations firm representing the school wrote in a statement Friday. “An investigation into the approval process for the skits and related classroom oversight is underway.”

Local Pastor Bryant Bacon expressed his disappointment with school administrators saying, “You look at all the different things that’s going on around the country already with race relations and you don’t think that you’d have to be dealing with that kind of stuff here.”

But the photo wasn’t offensive to everyone. In fact, some commented on Facebook in support of the skit.

One woman wrote, “We can’t do a history project on actual history, but yet our kids are to celebrate Black history month and Martin Luther King day … it’s all history, get over it!!!”

Another commented about her initial reaction after seeing the photo, “My first thought was there must be a reason that kid was dressed that way. As long as it was wore [sic] to reenact history and not as a threatening way there shouldn’t be a problem with it!”

But it did pose a problem, and the school is apologizing for it.

“Niles Community Schools and Niles High School understands the extreme sensitivity around this issue and does not condone or support this type of reenactment,” the school’s statement read. “We sincerely apologize to our entire community for this incident.”
