Brittney Griner Details Horrifying Truth About Russian Cellmate's Crimes

The WNBA star described how inmates were routinely 'tortured' for their horrible crimes.

Brittney Griner is opening up about her experiences while in Russian custody.

During an appearance on Cam Newton’s Funky Friday podcast, the WNBA superstar shared some disturbing details about the crimes committed by her cellmate.

"I had a cellmate in the very beginning. I thought something was off with her. She acted like a child, but she was a grown woman, but she very much acted like an adolescent child," Griner explained. "And then she had burn marks all over herself, and I found out after the fact that she was selling videos online of her husband and her childtogether."

Griner also revealed that some inmates were not separated by their crimes, and some were subject to torture.

“I’m like, ‘Well, I don’t want them to think that I’m in here for this crime. Don’t associate me with that one,” the WNBA champion said. “I didn’t really sleep at night ‘cause she be over there singing and doing weird stuff at night.”

"There’s not a lot of torturing from inmates with girls on the women’s side. But if you're in there for something like that, yeah, you're going to get tortured,” she continued. “And they would put their cigarettes out on her and make her sleep at the door, too.”

On Feb. 17, 2022, Griner was detained at the Moscow airport when authorities discovered two vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage.  After spending 293 days in a Russian detention facility, she was released as part of a prisoner exchange in December 2022.
