For the first time in nearly four decades, both the Howard University men’s and women’s basketball programs have captured the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular season championships in the same year.

The milestone for the programs was solidified Thursday with road victories at Norfolk State to close out the regular season. This marks the first time since 1987 that both Bison teams secured the top spot in the conference standings simultaneously. Both programs will enter the 2026 MEAC Basketball Tournament as No. 1 seeds when play begins March 11 at the Norfolk Scope Arena.

The Howard women’s team finished the regular season with a 23-7 overall record, highlighted by an undefeated run at Burr Gymnasium. This season also marks back-to-back years of 20 or more wins for the program. On the men's side, Howard finished with a 21-10 record, continuing a period of high-level performance for the university’s athletic department.

"This is truly an exciting time for Howard University Athletics," said Kery Davis, Howard’s vice president of Athletics. "Momentum is building, expectations are high, and our programs continue to represent the university with pride and purpose."

Postseason play for the women’s team begins Wednesday, March 11, at 12 p.m. against No. 8 seed South Carolina State. The men’s team is scheduled to play Friday, March 13, at 6 p.m. against the winner of the matchup between No. 4 seed Norfolk State and No. 5 seed South Carolina State.

Both opening games will be available for broadcast on ESPN+. The men’s tournament final is scheduled for Saturday, March 14, at 1 p.m. on ESPN2, followed by the women’s final at 4 p.m. on ESPNEWS. Winners of the tournament will receive automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament.
