John Wall To Lead Howard Basketball Into The Future
Five-time NBA All-Star John Wall is returning to the nation’s capital to serve as the president of basketball operations at Howard University, as first reported by ESPN. The move brings the former No. 1 overall pick back to the city where he spent a decade as the face of the Washington Wizards.
Wall’s partnership with the country's top-ranked HBCU began to take shape earlier this year. During a visit to the campus on Jan. 31, where he served as the team’s honorary captain, Wall expressed a long-term ambition to lead basketball operations at the professional level. This new role at Howard allows him to build that executive resume while providing the Bison with elite-level expertise.
The five-time All-Star has already taken an active, hands-on approach to the position. According to school officials, Wall is participating in team meetings and assisting in the evaluation of both high school recruits and transfer targets. His responsibilities are expansive, covering roster management, player mentorship, and the strategic navigation of name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals. He will also represent the program in revenue-sharing discussions and agent negotiations, working alongside head coach Kenny Blakeney and general manager Daniel Marks.
Wall joins a program that is currently experiencing historic success. Howard is one of only five mid-major programs out of 222 to reach the NCAA tournament in three of the past four seasons. This year, the Bison reached a new milestone by securing the first tournament win in school history with a victory over UMBC.
The transition to the front office follows Wall’s official retirement from the NBA in August. During his prime, Wall was regarded as one of the fastest and most athletic point guards in the league, finishing his career with averages of 18.7 points and 8.9 assists. He was a 2014 slam dunk champion and an elite defender, earning All-Defensive second-team honors in 2015.
Wall’s move mirrors recent trends of NBA stars moving into collegiate administration. Last year, Stephen Curry joined the staff at Davidson as an assistant general manager, while Trae Young accepted a similar role at Oklahoma.
