Laila Edwards Wins Olympic Gold And NCAA Title In Record 31 Days
The historic run Laila Edwards just pulled off is actually insane. In just 31 days, she went from standing on a podium in Milan with Olympic gold around her neck to lifting a NCAA women's hockey national championship trophy with the Wisconsin Badgers.
Call it a dynasty in Madison. The Badgers took down Ohio State 3-2 to grab their ninth NCAA title, more than any other school in the country. The win also makes them the first back-to-back national champs since Clarkson in 2018. Since 2019 alone, Wisconsin has brought home five titles, and they don’t look like they’re slowing down.
But the real story is the month Edwards just had. On Feb. 19, she made history as the first Black woman to win Olympic gold in ice hockey for Team USA. She didn’t just show up, either. She was a force, finishing second on the team with eight points and becoming the first Black woman to score an Olympic goal for the U.S.
Going from the high of the Olympics straight back into the grind of a college season is a massive mental and physical shift, but Edwards handled it like a vet. She stepped back into a Wisconsin locker room that was locked in a fierce rivalry with the Buckeyes, meeting them in the national final for the fourth straight year.
The victory marks Edwards’ third national title with the program, concluding a month that began with a gold medal and ended with another trophy for the Badgers' rafters.
