Broadway's Tupac-inspired musical Holler If Ya Hear Me is taking a bow. The groundbreaking show, directed by Kenny Leon and starring Saul Williams, will draw its curtains for the final time on Sunday, after 17 preview performances and 38 regular performances.
Though ambitious, the production was plagued with mixed reviews and poor audience turnout since it debuted in June. Still, Broadway had never seen anything quite like it. Holler If Ya Hear Me was not a musical biography of the late, great rapper, but incorporated his music into a totally unique storyline. It was also one of the few mainstream Broadway productions to incorporate hip hop.
In a statement released Monday evening, lead producer Eric L. Gold said, “We are so proud to be a part of this ground breaking production. The cast, musicians, production and creative teams gave more than just their professional excellence but contributed their passion as well…It saddens me that due to the financial burdens of Broadway, I was unable to sustain this production longer in order to give it time to bloom on Broadway. Tupac’s urgent socially important insights and the audiences’ nightly rousing standing ovations deserve to be experienced by the world.”
