Jonathan Kuminga Inks New Deal With Golden State Warriors
The standoff is finally over.
According to CBS Sports, Jonathan Kuminga and the Golden State Warriors have come to terms on a two-year, $48.5 million deal. The emerging forward agreed to the new deal instead of signing the qualifying offer, which was worth $7.9 million.
The Sacramento Kings and the Phoenix Suns were potential suitors for Kuminga’s services during the offseason. Each team offered sign-and-trade deals with the Kings, offering Malik Monk and a first-round pick. The Warriors declined each offer.
One of the points of contention during the contract standoff was Kuminga and Warriors coach Steve Kerr’s relationship. Although Kerr has often praised Kuminga's potential, he’s been openly critical of the young forward’s ability to mesh his ball-dominant style with the Warriors' offense based on movement. With the addition of Jimmy Butler, Kuminga received several DNPs (Did Not Play ) in the regular season and the playoffs.
Last season, Kuminga averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 47 appearances. Midway through the season, Kuminga missed 31 games after suffering an ankle sprain. In 2023-24, he averaged 16.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 74 games, the best season of his young career.
Along with Kuminga, the Warriors have signed veteran center Al Horford, guard De'Anthony Melton, and Gary Payton II.
