Marlon Wayans Talks Black Men in Hollywood Wearing Dresses, Emphasizes Embracing Artistry

"We're labeled by our own people. That is not an artist mindset. When you're an artist you go out and create art."

Individual style is something people have embraced for as long as fashion has existed. And what one person may find stylish, another may not. Such is the case when it comes to men wearing dresses for fashion or even if a role they're playing in a movie calls for it.

In a recent "Club Shay Shay" interview, Katt Williams spoke out about the portrayal of Black comedians as caricatures on screen, often through the use of dresses, referencing iconic characters like Madea and Big Momma.

But Marlon Wayans sees nothing wrong with it and feels it's part of embracing artistry.

During an appearance on Los Angeles' 92.3's "The Cruz Show," Wayans gave his candid opinion.

"You talking to a black man that put on a dress," he said. "That conversation to me, its silly. It's a negative thing that is only in Black people. We have for some reason been programmed to look down on the craziest parts about our spirits. We're supposed to embrace our past, our history, our heroes, different levels of comedy," he said.

Black male actors aren't the only ones who've donned dresses for a role, but it seems that they're the ones who receive the most criticism for it. Wayans went on to say that negative comments and connotations go against true artistry.

"We're labeled by our own people. That is not an artist mindset. When you're an artist you go out and create art."
