Eddie Murphy Honored at First Annual Comedy Awards

The comedic actor will be recognized for his phenomenal career.

Eddie Murphy will be honored at the inaugural presentation of the Comedy Awards.

The Golden Globe–winning actor/comedian will receive the show’s first Comedy Icon award, which pays homage to a “modern icon” who has contributed to comedy, and whose impact has changed the landscape and inspired future generations of entertainers. Murphy, who ignited his phenomenal career as a groundbreaking cast member on Saturday Night Live, will be recognized for his stand-up, sketch, film and TV work. Among his other accolades is an Oscar nomination for his role in the film adaptation of the musical Dreamgirls.

The impressive list of Comedy Award presenters and attendees includes Tina Fey, Jon Stewart, Jimmy Fallon, Tracy Morgan, South Park’s Matt Stone and Trey Parker, Ty Burrell, Louis CK, Stephen Colbert, Rob Corddry, Bill Hader, Chloe Moretz, Craig Robinson, Andy Samberg and Kristen Wiig.

Hip hop band The Roots will be the house band during the awards ceremony, and comedic singing group The Lonely Island (Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer) will perform “I Just Had Sex” with Akon for the first time live.

At the taping of the awards show on Saturday, March 26, the Johnny Carson Award for Comedic Excellence, along with the Comedy Icon award, will be presented.

The first annual Comedy Awards will air on Comedy Central, Spike, TV Land, VH1 and Nick at Nite on April 10.
