Claressa Shields Blasts Shannon Sharpe For Claiming She Can't Compete With Men
Two-time Olympic gold medalist Claressa Shields is not backing down after recent comments made by Pro Football Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe regarding her ability to compete against male professional fighters.
The exchange began following a recent episode of the Nightcap podcast, where Sharpe and co-host Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson discussed the physical divide between men’s and women’s sports. Sharpe specifically addressed Shields, suggesting that the self-proclaimed "GWOAT" (Greatest Woman of All Time) would not be successful in a sanctioned bout against a male professional, specifically mentioning lightweight boxer Rolando “Rolly” Romero.
Taking to social media on Monday, March 9, Shields fired back at the notion that she couldn't hold her own in the ring. The 30-year-old champion emphasized her resume and her daily training environment to dispel Sharpe's narrative.
“These guys doing all this chirping are the same guys who can not punch correctly or fight,” Shields posted. She directly tagged Sharpe, adding that he would "throw a hip out" trying to compete before asserting her dominance in the sport. Shields further clarified that while she does not seek out official fights against men, her preparation involves them exclusively.
“Lastly I don't aspire to fight a Man but I get busy inside that ring flat out,” Shields wrote. “All my sparring partners are men! And everyone knows I'm a banger with quick hands & yes defense go crazy! I don't post my sparring cause I have 0 to prove.”
The Flint, Michigan, native also took the opportunity to address the historical skepticism surrounding women’s boxing. She noted that critics once claimed women would never earn million-dollar purses or sell out major arenas, milestones she and fellow champion Katie Taylor have since achieved.
Sharpe doubled down on his stance during a Monday follow-up episode of Nightcap. While acknowledging Shields as the greatest woman to ever lace up gloves, he maintained that biological differences necessitate separate leagues. He compared the situation to tennis legend Serena Williams, who has previously stated she would not defeat a top-ranked male player.
“Claressa, you're not beating a male, trained fighter. You're not,” Shannon Sharpe said during the broadcast. “If that was the case, you would have fought men. They're not going to sanction it. We're not saying that you were a bad woman's fighter. You're great... We’re conceding that.”
Shields concluded her response by telling Sharpe his "doubt and opinions" were unnecessary and that her confidence is a requirement for her continued success in both boxing and mixed martial arts.
