Tyka Pryde is Bringing Bold Design and Heartfelt Transformations to BET Her

The 'Design My Space: Atlanta' host talks about her journey, design philosophy, and what to expect from BET Her’s first home makeover show.

Tyka Pryde is making waves as a visionary interior designer, bringing her expertise in style and color theory to homes, restaurants, and TV sets. Her journey began behind the scenes on hit shows like "Queer Eye," "HGTV Design Star," and "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," where she honed her eye for transformation. But it was TikTok that propelled her into the spotlight, as she shared her design insights and quickly built a devoted following. In 2022, Tyka took the leap and launched her design firm, tackling projects from set design to home makeovers—ultimately leading her to her biggest role yet: host of BET Her’s "Design My Space: Atlanta."

The first show of its kind in the BET universe, "Design My Space: Atlanta" follows Tyka as she collaborates with deserving individuals to reimagine their spaces. In this interview, she shares her journey from behind-the-scenes to center stage, breaks down popular design trends, and gives us a sneak peek at what’s in store when "Design My Space: Atlanta" premieres Wednesday, Feb. 26.

BET.com: This is the first time we're seeing a show like this in the BET sphere, and it’s about time! Talk about how you got on board.

Tyka Pryde: Yeah. It's the first design show in the BET world, on BET Her. And I've been behind the scenes in home renovation for a while on networks, but there has never been a show like this for us in this space. I was reached out to by the showrunner and director Keith Thomas and he was like, I have this show opportunity, I'd love for you to audition for it and I did and then I got a call a few months later. And I was like, oh my God, what is happening right now!

BET.com: In the show’s trailer, you say something like design isn't just about making things beautiful. Can you elaborate on that?

TP: For me, design is not just about making things beautiful. It's really about transforming lives because I think interior design has a real transformative power, and it changes the way people see themselves, how they show up in the world, and their mental health. It affects so many aspects of our lives and I think as black women, we put so many people ahead of ourselves, and these four women that I've helped so far, they've poured so much into other people and their lives. So I got the opportunity to really pour that love and care and attention back into them and their homes. And just to see how it affected them on a deep, emotional level, it proves that design is way more than surface level.

BET.com: What's something simple that people can do to make minor tweaks and adjustments to make their home feel more at ease?

TP: I think the number one thing I try to get people to put in their house is a drop zone by the front door. That's naturally where you're going to put your keys, take your jacket off, take your shoes off. That's a drop zone. A lot of people are like, I'll just take my jacket off and hang it up, or I'll bring my shoes upstairs, but you don't. That's not natural to you. So, if you have a storage bench where you put your shoes or make sure you have hooks for your keys, a console that you can shove stuff inside of a drawer so it looks well kept but somewhere. You don’t have to force yourself to be neat. Just put some hooks by the door.

BET.com: Finally, what do you hope viewers take away from “Design My Space: Atlanta?”

TP: I hope it's a really feel-good show that people want to watch and it's one of those shows you put on when you just need to smile and feel good, especially in these dark and depressing times. I think it's a very uplifting show, every single episode. We were super emotional and shed happy tears at the end. And I just want to show people that they matter, that their space matters, and that they need to invest more time and love into themselves.

"Design My Space: Atlanta" premieres Wednesday, Feb. 26. on BET Her.
