Read The Beautiful Message MLK's Daughter Wrote In Honor Of Her Father's 89th Birthday

She also asks that people remember her mother, Coretta Scott King, on this day.

As you know, today (January 15) is Martin Luther King Jr. Day and in honor of the great civil rights leader’s legacy many are taking at least a little time out of their day to remember him and all he did for mankind.

  • One of the best ways you can carry on that legacy is heeding guidance from his daughter, Bernice King. Earlier this morning she tweeted a photo of her late father along with a message super prevalent to today’s social climate.

  • “Today, we commemorate my father’s 89th birthday,” she wrote. “Beyond sharing #MLK quotes, I pray that our global community, from educators to politicians to artists to law enforcement, will truly hear his voice, follow his teachings and demonstrate his love for humanity. #MLKDay #MLK50Forward.”

Subsequently, Bernice King also wanted everyone to remember her mother’s legacy and says Coretta Scott King was the catalyst for her father’s strength. Just a reminder that behind every great man is a great woman.

  • Today, Martin Luther King Jr. would be 89 years old. He was a Baptist minister, social activist and leader of the Civil Rights Movement from the early 1950s until his assassination in 1968.

During his leadership, King inspired millions through activism and inspirational speeches. He was the head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and played a crucial role in ending legal segregation in the south. He also pushed for the eventually passed Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
