Venus Williams Gets Her Flowers With New Barbie Release
Mattel is celebrating Venus Williams with a new Barbie inspired by the tennis icon’s trailblazing career. The release nods to her landmark 2007 season, when she won another Grand Slam title and led the fight for equal prize money in professional tennis. That same year, she became a five-time Wimbledon champion and the first woman to secure equal pay at a top-level tournament.
Williams, now 45, shared what the honor means to her. “Growing up, I was taught early on that anything is possible with hard work and perseverance,” she said. “That belief has guided me to break barriers and use my platform to champion causes like equal pay—not just for myself, but for those who come after me.”
She added that being recognized as part of the Barbie Inspiring Women line carries a special meaning. “Being honored as a Barbie Inspiring Woman is incredibly special. I hope this doll encourages young people to dream big, know their worth, and pursue their goals with confidence and heart.”
The doll itself is styled with pieces that reflect her 2007 triumph, including a green gem necklace similar to the one she wore during her win, as well as a tennis racket, ball, and wristband.
Krista Berger, Senior Vice President of Barbie and Global Head of Dolls at Mattel, praised Williams’ impact both on and off the court. “Venus has redefined what it means to be a champion, not just through her Grand Slam titles, but through her fearless advocacy for pay equity,” Berger said. “Her unwavering fight for equal prize money in professional tennis forever changed the game, paving the way for future generations to dream bigger.”
The release arrives as Williams continues to compete. Last year, she defeated world No. 34 Peyton Stearns at the Mubadala Citi DC Open, making her the oldest athlete to win a singles match on the WTA Tour since Martina Navratilova in 2004. She is also set to play mixed doubles with Reilly Opelka at the 2025 U.S. Open.
Collectors can purchase the Venus Williams Barbie early through Barbie Club 59 beginning Thursday evening, with wider availability on Mattel’s online shop the following day.
