This Day in Black History: Jan. 10, 1957

Southern Christian Leadership Conference founded in Atlanta, Georgia.

In reaction to the Montgomery Bus Boycott that began in 1955, southern civil rights activists came together to form a regional organization, The Southern Christian Leadership Conference, in Atlanta, Georgia. Martin Luther King Jr. was elected as president of the organization, which dedicated itself to nonviolent action to secure racial equality in the segregated South.
