2022 NAACP Image Awards: 5 Reasons Why Regina King Was Crowned 'Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture'
The 53rd Annual NAACP Image Awards was a night to remember, and the multi-talented Regina King won for "Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture" for her outstanding contribution to Hollywood. The Academy Award-winning actress has been regarded as one of the hardest working women in the industry. With performances in award-winning films including If Beale Street Could Talk and Ray, King makes any category she’s involved in—a tough one to beat. As we gear up with another year honoring some of the best in Hollywood, here's a look at why she's so inspiring.
Regina King wins Best Supporting Actress
In 2019, King gave a powerful speech after receiving the Oscar for “Best Supporting Actress” for her role as Sharon Rivers, a mother trying to protect her pregnant daughter in If Beale Street Could Talk.
“To be standing here, representing one of the greatest artists of our time, James Baldwin, is a little surreal. Baldwin birthed this baby, and Barry, you nurtured her, you surrounded her with so much love and support,” she said. “So it's appropriate for me to be standing here because I am an example of what happens when support and love is poured into someone.”
Regina King holds her own in Poetic Justice
King had one of the most memorable and iconic scenes in the 1993 film Poetic Justice. The actress starred as the slick-mouth best friend Iesha, alongside Janet Jackson’s character Justice. Aisha tells off her boyfriend Chicago, played by Joe Torry, during an explosive argument on the side of the road.
Regina King does it all in Daddy Daycare
King’s character Kim Hilton plays several roles in the family sitcom Daddy Daycare. She is a devoted wife, businesswoman, and mother providing for her family after her advertising-exec husband Charlie, played by comedian Eddie Murphy, becomes a stay-at-home dad and daycare owner.

King gave audience members chills following her powerful performance in the Academy Award-winning film Ray alongside actor and singer Jamie Foxx. King stars as Margie, Ray’s mistress, who finds out that she’s pregnant and demands the singer leave his family. Ray later writes "Hit the Road Jack,” which has a solo by Margie. She ultimately leaves the Raylettes to embark on her own journey as a solo artist.
Regina King is Lydia Adams
King plays the tough as nail and takes no mess, LAPD Officer Lydia Adams in Southland. Though the show didn’t last, but King’s portrayal of Adams left a lasting mark on viewers.
