Why A’ja Wilson’s Crimson Curls Are the Talk Of Media Day

The four-time league MVP continues her streak of vibrant preseason hair reveals while celebrating a record-breaking $5 million contract extension.

A’ja Wilson walked into the Las Vegas Aces media day rocking a new look that keeps her preseason tradition alive. The four-time WNBA MVP used the annual event to debut vibrant red hair, confirming to reporters that the style was a direct nod to the X-Men character Jean Grey. This marks the third year in a row that Wilson has utilized the spotlight of media day to unveil a personal aesthetic shift.

In 2024, Wilson arrived with platinum silver hair to celebrate the franchise’s championship win over the New York Liberty and its subsequent rebrand to silver and black. By the start of the 2025 season, she transitioned to a pink style, which served as a marketing centerpiece for the launch of her signature sneaker, the Nike A’One.

The timing of this latest reveal follows a landmark professional milestone for the South Carolina alumna. On April 15, Wilson officially signed a three-year, $5 million supermax contract extension to remain with the Aces. The fully guaranteed deal is the largest contract in league history. Under the new collective bargaining agreement, Wilson is set to earn $1.4 million this season, a significant increase from her previous team-friendly deals.

On the court, she continues to set a historic pace. During the 2025 campaign, she became the first player in WNBA history to collect a fourth MVP trophy. She finished the season averaging 23.4 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game. Her performance anchored a Las Vegas team that closed the season on a 16-0 winning streak and captured its third title in four years.

With her long-term future in Nevada secured and her "Jean Grey" era officially underway, Wilson and the Aces turn their attention toward the 2026 season. The roster remains largely intact, with returning stars Chelsea Gray and Jackie Young joining Wilson as they attempt to match the four-peat achieved by the Houston Comets from 1997 to 2000.
