Missy Elliott Shares the Real Reason Her Mother Has Never Seen Her Perform Live

The Virginia native says her mom will be in attendance as she becomes the first female rapper to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Missy Elliott is opening up about why she’s kept her mother, Patricia Elliott, from seeing her live performances until now. The hip-hop trailblazer will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this week, with her mom there to witness the historic moment.

Ahead of the event, Missy, who is set to be the first female rapper to be inducted, sat down with “Good Morning America,” where she revealed that it will also be “the first time” her mother has seen her on stage.

“My mother is coming, and she has never seen me perform before,” the 52-year-old told host Robin Roberts. Missy shared that while her mom has seen her on TV, “she's never been to a show because, you know, I had some little words I didn't ever want her to hear. And so she's coming for the first time.”

Mrs. Elliott was by her daughter’s side recently during the second annual Missy Elliott Day in her hometown of Portsmouth, VA, to present a $50,000 check to the Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority (PRHA) to assist families behind on their rent and facing eviction as a result.
