Jill Scott Goes Back on Cosby Defense, Says Being Black and Beloved Is 'Dangerous'

After retracting her support, the singer appears to defend her former mentor once again.

Jill Scott still doesn't seem comfortable turning on her former mentor. After the bombshell deposition in which Cosby admitted to using quaaludes to drug women for the purpose of sex, Scott finally spoke out against the fallen icon.
“About Bill Cosby. Sadly his own testimony offers proof of terrible deeds, which is all I have ever required to believe the accusations,” she tweeted before later adding; “I stood by a man I respected and loved. I was wrong. it hurts!”

But now, Scott is comparing the Cosby fallout to the fate of other celebrities accused of heinous crimes — and has deducted that Cosby is, in fact, a victim of racism. “I’ve watched — let’s say for instance, Phil Spector. I don’t know if that was a proclivity or a moment of insanity, or whatever it was. But he killed a woman,” she says to The Huffington Post. “And he was tried and convicted and is serving time and is still in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I’m noticing that Bill Cosby — or the legacy — is being pulled apart inch by inch. I’m saying what is fair for some should be fair for all, where if the punishment fits the crime then it should be dealt with for everyone not just some."
She continued, “I’m just saying being a creator or being an artist that is a Black man — that is beloved — is one of the most dangerous positions you can ever be in. Respected is one thing, but beloved is dangerous. And more importantly than everything else, they’re just people. Fallible and sometimes f****d up.”
Though Jilly's comments have so-far flown under the radar, rumblings of backlash are already stirring with fans calling her out for comparing apples to oranges. It's worth noting that unlike Spector, Cosby will likely never face a day in criminal court over his crimes.
