Marvel Announced Mahershala Ali Will Star In 'Blade' Reboot And Fans Can't Contain Themselves

The role was revealed at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday.

Perhaps one of the biggest announcements coming from this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego is Mahershala Ali taking the mantle from Wesley Snipes for Marvel’s Blade reboot.

The casting for the highly-anticipated film was announced during the studio’s Hall H presentation, where Ali received massive applause as he took the stage donning a Blade baseball hat.

  • Kevin Fiege, President of Marvel Studios, expressed his excitement to Variety after the role announcement. "He's one of the greatest actors working today," he told the magazine. "He's going to destroy the part. It's a dream."

Twitter was also lit over the news. See some of the reaction below.

  • Blade made its initial appearance in the Marvel comic series during the 1970s via the comic book The Tomb of Dracula #10. The character is known as a vampire hunter who is half-mortal and half-immortal.

Ali will replace Wesley Snipes who played the role in three films, Blade, Blade II and Blade: Trinity, from 1998 to 2004. The series grossed $204 million at the box office and is considered to be the unofficial kick-off of modern comic book movie culture.

The two-time Academy Award-winner is no stranger to comic book movie roles. He appeared in Marvel and Netflix’s Luke Cage as villain Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes.
