Could Mary J. Blige Be the Next Equalizer?

Denzel Washington nominates R&B diva for the role.

One doesn't usually think about the chemistry between a director and his leading man, but Antoine Fuqua and Denzel Washington have it in spades. The duo, who earned Oscars together with their first collaboration, Training Day, are back at it with The Equalizer, in which Washington plays a retired commando who comes back for one last job.
We sat down with the longtime friends and collaborators (they'll soon work together again on a remake of The Magnificent Seven) to talk about their latest project, and who from the world of R&B and hip hop they would nominate to be the female Equalizer. "Mary J. Blige," Washington says without hesitation. "She might surprise you! Or that other gal, Rihanna."
The pair also take sides in a showdown between Training Day's Alonzo Harris and The Equalizer's Robert McCall, and then get serious discussing what they teach their sons about police brutality in the wake of the deaths of Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown.
"I've had to make sure my boys know how to handle things if they're stopped," Washington confesses. "I'm not trying to scare them, but as a parent you need to make sure they know." The actor also recounts an incident when he was stopped by police without cause.
