Look: This Illinois Personal Trainer Allegedly Knew He Had HIV and Passed It to Three Women
A personal trainer in Wilmette, Illinois, is currently facing three counts of criminal transmission of HIV after giving the virus to three different women.
Cook County prosecutors alleged that 46-year-old Jimmy Amutavi repeatedly had unprotected sex with all three women. They said that once he was confronted about having the virus, he denied it, even though he was diagnosed in December of 2001.
Judge Laura M. Sullivan ordered the father of a 5-year-old to be held on a $150,000 bail and prohibited him from contacting any of the victims.
Amutavi knew the women because he worked as a personal trainer for all three since April 2015. During his time as their trainer, he entered long-term relationships with all of them and engaged in unprotected sex.
The defense attorney for Amutavi argued that he had been taking retroviral medication that made it nearly impossible for him to transmit the virus that causes AIDS.
If convicted during trial, Amutavi faces three to seven years in prison for each charge, which means he could serve a total of 21 years in prison.
