Oprah Let A Hater Know Maya Angelou Gave Permission To Use Her First Name

She also soft flexed on everyone in the process.

Oprah’s influence is massive, but it’s her soft flex game that is truly unforgettable.

On Instagram, the entrepreneur and former talk show host made a birthday tribute post to Maya Angelou. “Maya would have been 91 today!” Oprah captioned her post, in part “This is my favorite picture of us. Even in death I feel the ‘unbroken continuity’ of her mother-sister-friendship referenced in the Henry Scott Holland canon. Death is nothing at all.”

A follower read the beginning of the caption, and for some reason, thought it would be a good idea to attempt to correct Ms. Winfrey. “Ms. Angelou to you Oprah. You have no license to call her Maya. She will always be Ms. Angelou.”

Oprah clapped all the way back, in the nicest way possible, while hitting the soft flex. “She actually gave me permission after the 2nd or 3d visit to her home to call her ‘Maya’. Believe me I’ve witnessed when other folk did NOT have that permission!”

Ooop!

This back-and-forth comes after vintage footage surfaced of Maya Angelou telling a young woman to address her as Ms. Angelou, which may have prompted the IG user to make the comment they did. Still, trying to come at one queen for her relationship with another is suspect, at best. See below:
