Tidal wants that old thing back.
The streaming service has started selling CDs — and they’re not very affordable. Physical copies of Prince’s 11-track HITNRUN album will cost you $25.58 ($21.59 for the CD and $3.99 for shipping and handling), and it doesn’t even include a digital download, which is another $17.99.
An artist of Prince’s stature is certainly worth the money, but people aren’t buying CDs as much these days. While vinyl is seeing a resurgence, sales of CDs and digital downloads dropped, according to Neilsen’s 2014 year-end report. Streaming, however, continues to rise in popularity among consumers.
Tidal has faced scrutiny for it's pricey subscription fees and could catch more heat for the expensive CDs. On the plus side, the company is proving that it doesn’t mind deviating from its digital structure, and it might just pay off.
