False Twitter Feeds Claim Obama is Dead

Hackers used a FoxNews.com twitter account to claim that President Obama had been assassinated. The news organization alerted the Secret Service has called for an investigation by Twitter.

Hackers used a FoxNews.com Twitter account early Monday morning to falsely claim that President Obama had been assassinated. Jeff Misenti, vice president and general manager of Fox News Digital, said that the site is working with Twitter to address the matter as quickly as possible.

“We will be requesting a detailed investigation from Twitter about how this occurred, and measures to prevent future unauthorized access into FoxNews.com accounts,” Misenti said.

Secret Service spokesman George Ogilvie said that his agency “will be investigating the matter and will conduct the appropriate follow up.”

One of the messages said, “We wish @joebiden the best of luck as our new president of the United States. In such a time of madness, there’s light at the end of the tunnel.” The account has more than 34,000 followers.

The White House did not issue a comment on the matter. Obama and his family celebrated the July 4 holiday at the White House with military families and members of the administration. Ironically, the president plans to hold a Twitter town hall meeting on July 6.
