"It's funny to hear a female talk about routes."

Cam Newton is at the center of controversy after his remarks towards a female reporter yesterday.

When Charlotte Observer beat reporter Jourdan Rodrigue asked the Carolina Panthers quarterback about the team's wide receiver Devin Funchess welcoming the physicality of routes, Newton smirked before saying, "it's funny to hear a female talk about routes like ... it's funny.''

Wow. Well, Newton was immediately slammed for his comment, which people called sexist. That being said, there were those who didn't think Cam's comment was sexist at all. It all made for several hot takes on Twitter.

  1. Watch how Cam Newton made light of Jourdan Rodrigue's question

He had to know that people were going to talk about this.

  2. The Charlotte Observer's Panthers' beat writer clapped back with these tweets

ESPN reported that the Panthers' director of communications, Steven Drummond, said that he spoke with both Newton and Rodrigue, and that the star QB expressed regret, but Rodrigue denied ever receiving an apology.

"This afternoon, I did my job as an NFL beat writer and asked Cam Newton a question about one of his receivers. I was dismayed by his response, which not only belittled me but countless other women before me and beside me who work in similar jobs," Rodrigue said, as reported by ESPN. "I sought Mr. Newton out as he left the locker room a few minutes later. He did not apologize for his comments."

  3. Immediately, Cam's comments were described as everything from 'sexist' to 'demeaning'

You did this to yourself, Cam.

  4. Stephen A. Smith named several legendary female journalists, while getting Cam all the way together for his comments

    Talk to 'em!

  5. One person implored all male sports journalists to have Jourdan's back on this one

  6. And on behalf of all women ...

    He needs to know.

  7. Despite the outrage and disappointment in Newton's remarks, some people don't believe that they were sexist

    Do you agree?

  8. BUt those assertions were drowned out rather quickly

LZ Granderson's tweet is internet gold.

  9. And then there's these sentiments ...

    Quarterback sacked. Think he'll apologize?
