Bracket Breakers: Greatest NCAA Tournament Upsets of All Time

What a time to be alive!

March Madness Is Here! - What's the NCAA Tournament without a Cinderella squad upsetting its way through the bracket? The 2016 NCAA Tournament's first round Thursday night presented its fair share of candidates to do just that, as 12th-seeded Arkansas-Little Rock knocked off No. 5 Purdue, 11th-seeded Wichita State defeated No. 6 Arizona, No. 11 Gonzaga blasted No. 6 Seton Hall and even 12th-seeded Yale shocked No. 5 Baylor, notching its first Tournament win in its school's history. While those upsets are remarkable in their own right, we're not quite ready to name them amongst the greatest of all time just yet. That's because, through the years, college hoop fans have seen some of the most spectacular upsets in Tournament history — some of which even spawned future NBA stars such as Stephen Curry, Steve Nash and Danny Manning. 1983 NC State   - All top-ranked Houston had was two future NBA Hall of Famers in Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler as part of the feared Phi Slama Jama. But North Carolina State had heart, and the "Cardiac Pack" kept piling on one improbable victory after another until a 3-pointer fell short, only for Lorenzo Charles to miraculously scoop it out the air and dunk it home to give the Wolfpack the national-title win. Despite being the sixth seed with a 26-10 record, the Wolfpack did it. Watching late NC State coach Jimmy Valvano storm the court and run around in euphoria will permanently be etched in hoop fans' minds.(Photo: Ronald C. Modra/Sports Imagery/Getty Images)

1985 Villanova - Like Houston a couple of years before, the 1985 top-ranked Georgetown Hoyas touted a future Hall of Famer in Patrick Ewing, who dominated college ball on both sides of the ball, whether it was overpowering players in the post or ferociously defending the paint. That being said, Ewing was simply outplayed by the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player, Ed Pinckney of the eighth-seed Villanova, who defeated Georgetown in the national title game.(Photo: Georgetown/Collegiate Images/Getty Images.)

1991 Duke - You don't tend to equate Duke to be an underdog, but in 1991 it was just that up against the UNLV Runnin' Rebels, who people thought were damn-near invincible. Well, not against the Blue Devils, who got great efforts from Christian Laettner and Bobby Hurley to end UNLV's ridiculous 45-game winning streak.(Photo: Doug Pensinger /Allsport)

2013 Florida Gulf Coast  - How's this for a debut in the NCAA Tournament? No. 15 Florida Gulf Coast more than made its presence felt in 2013, knocking out second-seeded Georgetown and getting all the way to the Sweet Sixteen, capturing the hearts and imagination of the country in the process.(Photo: Rob Carr/Getty Images)

1993 Santa Clara - Another 15th-seeded team, Santa Clara, shocked No. 2 Arizona back in the opening round of the 1993 NCAA Tournament. But in retrospect, perhaps it shouldn't have been a shock. 1996 Princeton - It was the backdoor-pass play heard around the world, as No. 13 Princeton used it to perfection to unbelievably eliminate defending champion UCLA in the 1996 Tournament's first round. Talk about March Madness!(Photo: Jamie Squire /Allsport)

2012 Lehigh - C.J. McCollum wasn't playing fair. The shooting guard used No. 15 Lehigh's second-round match-up with second-seeded Duke to drop 30 points and catch scouts' eyes. Hey... it worked! McCollum was selected as the No. 10 overall selection of the 2013 NBA Draft. (Photo: Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images)

2008 Davidson - Another player to use the Tournament to make himself a household name? Stephen Curry. Before winning the NBA MVP and leading the Golden State Warriors to a league title last year, Curry was lighting it up for Davidson, where he scored at least 30 points in each of his first four tournament games, taking his Cinderella squad all the way to the Elite 8 of the 2008 Tournament. His flashes of greatness were on display then.(Photo: Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)

1988 Kansas - They were called "Danny and the Miracles" for a reason. Danny Manning, with legendary coach Larry Brown beside him, made sure Kansas's sixth seed was nothing more than a number, rolling to upset wins over Kansas State, Duke and Oklahoma to be crowned national champs in 1988.   (Photo: Getty Images)
