Why They Rock... - In a time when being Black and female can sometimes feel like more of a burden than a blessing, the Black Girls Rock! awards is right on time. The organization, founded by DJ Beverly Bond, serves to mentor young Black girls and combat negative images of Black women in the media. The show airs November 7 on BET and will honor various Black women in the media who have led exemplary lives. In the meantime, we’ve decided to tell you why we think a few of the honorees rock!

Raven-Symone - In this newly released photo shot by photographer Marisa Leigh, Raven proves that you can definitely be sexy with all of your clothes on. Ebony magazine nicknamed the Disney darling the “$400 Million Woman,” but, surprisingly, she revealed to Wendy Williams that she’s both fierce and frugal. We love it!

Keri Hilson - Miss Keri Baby has been serving up some fierce animal print ensembles over the last few months. Coupled with her vintage blonde curls, the singer has created a look that perfectly fits her “No Boys Allowed” mentality. Yeah, she’s sweet, but she will bite if you get too close.

Monica - “I don’t know, I guess I’m just blessed,” is what Monica once told us when asked the secret behind her flawless brown skin. The singer is rarely caught with a pimple, splotch or misguided makeup palette. What’s even more beautiful is the way she loves her two sons. Such a great mommy to marvel.

Jill Scott - We’d pay good money to see a smile more beautiful than Jill Scott’s. With an energy that can light up an entire stadium, Jill is easy to love. And so is her ever-changing hair. We don’t know about you, but every one of her albums stays in heavy rotation. “I was just thinking about you…”

Nia Long - Immortalized as Nina Moseley in “Love Jones” and Jordan Armstrong in “The Best Man,” Nia Long is captivating, mesmerizing and a joy to watch. Some have described her as ‘Bubblin’ Brown Sugar’ and we’ll add that she’s one of the sexiest Black women to ever grace a big screen. Don’t you agree?

Missy Elliott - We like to think of Missy Elliott as both a musical powerhouse and a style icon. She paved the way for many female artists to let their clothes make an impact, rather than the lack thereof. We see splashes of Missy’s swag in Nicki Minaj’s colorful closet. They both push the envelope when it comes to wowing the masses.

Kelly Price - Remember when Kelly Price first hit the scene? She was heralded as a champion for women, writing emotional songs that made you think she’d intercepted your deepest thoughts. More than a decade later and she’s still in tune with us. Her latest single, “Tired,” is the perfect song to turn on when you’ve had more than enough. Thanks, Kelly.

Ledisi - Ledisi, whose name means “to bring forth” in Yoruba, has a voice that’s just about as popular as her charismatic red locs. She’s quite the charmer in person, sneaking in a smile after virtually every sentence. Oh, and in the soul realm, she’s unrivaled. Nobody blows on the mic like this woman right here.
