The President will then deliver remarks on reforming the health care system to reduce costs in room 350 in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.  In the afternoon, the President will welcome the University of North Carolina’s men’s basketball team to the White House.

In First Lady News ... - The First Lady continues her outreach to the DC community and her support of national service programs by visiting the Corporation for National and Community Service, where she will deliver remarks.  On Saturday, Mrs. Obama will give the commencement speech to University of California, Merced’s first full senior class – the University opened in 2005. UC Merced students actively sought out the First Lady as commencement speaker by writing letters to Mrs. Obama.

Detroit’s New Mayor - Ex-NBA baller Dave Bing has been elected Detroit's newest mayor and will serve through the end of the year.  The 65-year-old Detroit Pistons great defeated incumbent and fellow Democrat Ken Cockrel Jr. Tuesday in a special runoff election.  Bing will serve out the remainder of former mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's second term, but must run again in the regular Aug. 4 nonpartisan primary and win the Nov. 3 general election to hold on to the mayor's seat for a full four years.

Outside the Beltway - On Monday at 3 p.m. former NBA great Dave Bing was sworn-in as mayor of Detroit. Last week, Bing defeated interim mayor Ken Cockrel, Jr. in a special election to fill the remainder of Kwame Kilpatrick's term, which lasts until December 31. Bing has said he will also run for a full, four-year term that begins in 2010.
