Oprah's Mom Countersues - High-end fashion store, Valentina, claims Vernita Lee (Oprah's mama) ran up a $155,000 tab as of July 1. They sued, saying Lee hasn't been making the $2,000 minimum monthly payments. Lee countersued, claiming the store took advantage of her "lack of knowledge, ability and/or capacity" when they set up the account for her.

J.J.’s Recuperating - Janet may be out of the hospital, but she's still ailing from whatever laid her low Monday night, forcing her to cancel a concert in Canada. The 42-year-old singer became "suddenly ill" during sound check and was taken to the hospital. Jackson is to resume her tour on Saturday in Greensboro, N.C.

In Tune for Barack - Two of the biggest names in rock music are tuning up for Obama. Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel are coming together for a joint concert at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City on Oct. 16. That's the day after his final debate with John McCain. If you want to see the show, you'll need to be a pretty high roller. Tickets start at $500 and go up to $10,000.

And She's Telling You - Thanks to that big song from "Dreamgirls," many people know J. Hud as a singer of power ballads such as "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But she says she has more going for her than that musically. There are "many other dimensions" to her singing, she notes. Her new album, Jennifer Hudson, hit stores Tuesday.

Game Skates Again - It looks like The Game skates again. A judge ruled this week that the rapper won't have to serve any time for allegedly punching a cousin at a family funeral as long as he does 36 anger-management meetings by February 2009.

Escapes Tax Bill - A big break for Beenie Man. A Jamaican judge has cleared the dancehall star of tax-evasion charges. Jamaican authorities say he owed nearly $1 million in overdue taxes. But the judge agreed with the defense claim that the Jamaican government never informed Beenie Man of his legal rights when auditors ruled on his case last year.

Punished For Hanging - Four students at George Fox University in Oregon have been given "immediate, long-term suspension" and ordered to do public service for hanging a likeness of Obama from a tree on campus. That might not be the only trouble the students will face. The FBI is investigating whether any civil rights were violated in the case.

No Charges - Authorities have decided that Kanye and his manager won't be charged with a felony over an incident at LAX Airport on Sept. 11, in which a paparazzo's camera was smashed into pieces. A decision on whether West and his manager will be hit with lesser charges isn't expected until next week.

Paralyzed - Jacksonville Jaguars offensive tackle Richard Collier, who was shot earlier this month, is paralyzed below the waist and had his left leg amputated. Collier, who had five bullets removed from his urinary bladder, suffered bouts of pneumonia, infections and renal failure, will never walk again, a doctor said.
