Michelle Obama, Dr. Jill Biden Go to Haiti - On Tuesday, Michelle Obama made her first official trip out of the country as First Lady when she visited Haiti with the Vice President’s wife, Jill Biden. During her visit she met with Haiti’s president, Rene Preval, and his wife Elisabeth Debrosse Preval, toured Port-au-Prince and visited a school for displaced children.

Michelle Obama Visits Mexico - After leaving Haiti, Mrs. Obama went straight to Mexico for a two-day visit. She visited Mexico City’s National Museum of Anthropology with First Lady Margarita Zavala, danced wit h children at an elementary school and met with embassy officials.

NAACP to Honor Cicely Tyson - The NAACP has announced that actress Cicely Tyson will be honored with the Association’s highest honor, the Spingarn Medal. Tyson, who will be the 95th person to receive the prestigious award, will accept the honor at the oldest civil rights organization’s convention in Kansas City July 15. “Cicely Tyson’s contributions to African American arts and culture in both acting and modeling are unprecedented and inspiring."

Conrad Murray's License Restricted - Both the Texas Medical Board and a California judge have prohibited Michael Jackson’s doctor Conrad Murray from administering propofol. Murray has been charged in the death of the superstar; authorities say propofol is the drug that was responsible for killing him. Murray has pled not guilty to the charge of involuntary manslaughter.

The Estefans Host The President - In a move that is sure to turn off some in the traditionally conservative Cuban community, singer Gloria Estefan and her husband Emilio are set to host President Barack Obama at their Miami Beach home for a Democratic National Committee fundraiser on Thursday. The cocktail reception is $30,400-per couple.

Civil Rights Leader Benjamin Hooks Dies - Legendary Civil Rights Leader Benjamin Hooks died Thursday morning at his home in Memphis after his battle with a long illness. He was 85. Hooks was executive director of the NAACP in 1977, and helped breathe life back into the organization by rebuilding both its finances and its membership. Former President George W. Bush awarded him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2007, calling him “a calm yet forceful voice for fairness, opportunity and personal responsibility.”

Black Woman Could Be Supreme Court Justice - According to reports, the former chief justice of the Georgia Supreme Court Leah Ward Sears is being considered by the president as a replacement for retiring Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens. Sears, 54, has broken a number of barriers in her career which include: being the youngest person ever to sit on the state Supreme Court, and being the nation’s first Black woman to preside over a state Supreme Court as chief justice.

FAMU Wins Lawsuit - Historical Black school, Florida A&M University has won a judgment against a porn production company. The company, RK Netmedia, will have to pay the school $105,000 in a settlement agreement for producing the “Big Rattler 77” sex tape which the school’s president says “damaged the good name, trademark, and reputation of Florida A&M University.” According to the school, the settlement money will be used to fund two full scholarships and pay $15,000 in lawyer fees.

76ers Fire Ed Jordan - The Philadelphia 76ers fired Coach Eddie Jordan after only one season. Jordan touted his Princeton offense when he was hired by the team last year, but the philosophy didn’t translate into wins as the team finished the season 27-55 and failed to make the playoffs for the first time in three years. The team is now searching for their fourth coach in three years.

Rihanna Cheers Her New BF at Ballpark - ASinger Rihanna went out to a Dodger game Tuesday to cheer on her man Matt Kemp. Eric Holder Testifies - Attorney General Eric Holder faced some of his toughest Republican critics in Congress. He said Wednesday the U.S. still hopes to capture and interrogate Osama bin Laden but expects the al-Qaida leader won't be taken alive. Testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee, the attorney general answered questions about terrorism issues, including the planned shutdown of the Guantanamo Bay. He said the administration is till reviewing options for trial locations.

Cop Pressure May Have Forced Confession - The two youngest boys charged with gang-raping a 7-year-old girl last month may have been pressured into confessing and implicating others in the case, according to two people with firsthand knowledge of the police interrogations.Two men — 20-year-old Gregory Leary and 19-year-old Timear Lewis — and three boys, ages 13, 14 and 17, have been charged with rape at the March 28 party.

Santonio Holmes Traded - The Pittsburgh Steelers traded their former Super Bowl MVP receiver Santonio Holmes to the New York Jets for a fifth-round pick in this month’s draft, earlier this week. Holmes won’t actually play until the fifth game though, because the NFL has suspended him without pay for the first four games of the season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

John Tesh Confirms Oprah Affair - Former Entertainment Tonight anchor John Tesh confirmed that he indeed used to date Oprah Winfrey, validating one of the claims in an unauthorized biography on the talk show diva. Tesh says he dated Winfrey while they worked at a local news station in Nashville, Tenn in the ‘70s. According to the book, “Oprah: A Biography,” the two also briefly lived together. Tesh broke it off because he couldn’t handle an interracial relationship, the books says.

Serena Gets Wild Card - Top-ranked tennis star Serena Williams will be able to play in next month’s Italian Open after receiving a wild-card entry. Williams had been sidelined since January due to a knee injury and didn’t enter the tournament originally. It’s considered a key warmup for the French Open.

Earthquake Ravages China - A series of earthquakes struck the Tibetan area of western China on Wednesday leaving at least 1,144 people dead. According to local media, another 417 people are still missing. The largest quake, recorded by the U.S. Geological Survey had a magnitude of 6.9. In the aftermath of the quake, panicked people flooded the streets of a Qinghai province where many homes had been destroyed. A mass cremation will take place Saturday morning for hundreds of bodies.

Artur Davis Snubs Black Groups - The man running to become Alabama’s first Black governor is telling Black groups in the state he doesn’t need their permission to run. Rep. Artur Davis shocked Black political leaders in the state when he announced he wasn’t going to participate in the endorsement screenings for the state’s three Black political groups. “The day has ended when these groups decided who wins the support of Black voters in this state,” he said. The groups see it as a snub.

Obama Eyes Deep Space - President Obama says he is fully committed NASA’s goals and its future. He laid out his plan for federal spending to bring more private companies into space exploration following the soon-to-end space shuttle program. "We want to leap into the future," not continue on the same path as before, Obama said as he sought to reassure NASA workers that America's space adventures would go on. He promised a landing on an asteroid and the planet Mars by 2030.

Black Press Founder Dies - Carolyn M. Rodgers, a Chicago poet and writer who helped found one of the country's oldest and largest Black-owned book publishers, has died. She was 69.The Chicago-based Third World Press says Rodgers died April 2 at Mercy Hospital after battling an undisclosed illness.

Steele: GOP Wants to Help Blacks - Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele told an audience that his party wants to help the Black community but African Americans need to do a better job of depending on themselves and not the government to create opportunities. Steele received a warm welcome from hundreds of Black activists at the annual meeting of the National Action Network, an organization founded by the Rev. Al Sharpton.

Sarah Palin Blasts Pres. Obama - Former Alaska governor and Sen. John McCain’s running mate during the 2008 presidential campaign, Sarah Palin, rallied the troops in Boston with sharp critiques of President Obama. She was speaking at a gathering of between 3,000 to 5,000 Tea Party supporters. She said the President can keep his change, she’ll hold on to her guns, religion and small government.

Xerox CEO Pay Jumps 77 Percent - Ursula Burns, CEO of Xerox and the first Black woman to lead a Fortune 500 company, got a 77 percent raise last year after being promoted from president and cutting company costs. Last year she was paid $9.9 million, up from $5.6 million the year before, reports the Associated Press.

Al Sharpton Hosts National Summit - The Rev. Al Sharpton’s group, the National Action Network, hosted its annual convention this week in New York. Leaders in the fields of civil rights, religion, politics and education will gather to talk about issues affecting communities of color. Notable guests include Republican National Chairman Michael Steele, NAACP President Benjamin Jealous and National Urban League President Marc H. Morial The convention started Wednesday and will run through Saturday.

At Masters, Tiger Woods Comes Up Short - Tiger Woods’ comeback to golf fell a little short Sunday when he tied for fourth at the Master’s tournament in Augusta, Georgia. He had a great start, but failed to maintain the momentum on the course. Phil Mickelson, his biggest rival on the PGA Tour, won by three strokes over Lee Westwood. His next tournament will be the Quail Hollow Championship, which begins April 29.

MLB Honors Jackie Robinson - Major League Baseball celebrated Jackie Robinson this week. It was the 63rd anniversary of Robinson's breaking of baseball's color barrier. The Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins had the first game of the day, and each player at Target Field on Thursday wore a No. 42 jersey in Robinson's honor. This day's primary celebration was in New York at Yankee Stadium. Robinson's widow, Rachel Robinson, and his daughter, Sharon Robinson, attended. Grandson Jesse Simms threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

South Africa: Racial Tensions Rising - South African President Jacob Zuma recently condemned the African National Congress Youth League’s Julius Malema for reviving an anti-apartheid era song that refers to killing White farmers. “We do recognize that we have a responsibility to act in a way that reduces the potential for tension, and encourages unity,” Zuma said last Saturday. Obamas Pay Tax Bill - Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, made $5.5 million last year. They paid about one-third of it in federal income taxes. The Obamas gave $329,100 to charities in 2009. The president, who released his tax returns Thursday, also donated his entire $1.4 million Nobel Peace Prize award to 10 charitable groups.
