Go With the Flow - If summer’s humidity regularly jacks up the definition on your twist-outs — and that bothers you — just don’t do twist-outs. The same goes for flat ironing your hair straight. Why fight nature? Opt for styles that thrive on the moisture in the air, like a wash and go.   (Photo: Getty Images)

Reach for the Gel - If you can’t do without your beloved twist-out, but frizz is crashing the party, adding gel to your water-based moisturizer can help lock it out.  (Photo: Getty Images/iStockphoto)

Keep Up With Your Maintenance - From deep conditioning to getting your ends clipped, it’s just as important to take care of your tresses in the summer as it is in cold temps. Fall off, and you risk having jagged ends by fall.   (Photo: Getty Images/iStockphoto)

Seal With Oil - Moisture is the name of the natural hair game year round, but it’s extremely important when the weather is extreme, such as the dead of winter and the height of summer. Use a water-based moisturizer to hydrate your strands, and then use an oil to “seal” the moisture inside and prevent your hair from sucking up all the water in the air, which leads to frizz. Bonus: Many natural oils — including shea, hemp seed and avocado — offer SPF protection, too.   (Photo: Getty Images/iStockphoto)

Stock Up on Head Wraps and Hats - Whether your hair isn’t doing exactly what you want, or you need to run out but your Bantu knot-out is taking forever to dry in the humid air, a chic head wrap or topper will not only get you out the door, but it will protect your strands from the harsh sun, too.   (Photo: Getty Images/iStockphoto)

Put It Up - Burning up? Get your hair off your face with a protective style or updo. Whether you opt for twists, braids or a high bun, you’ll prevent overheating and tuck away fragile ends.  (Photo: Getty Images/iStockphoto)

Prep Before You Swim - If you’re heading to the pool, wet your hair for at least 20 minutes to decrease the amount of chlorine it soaks up. You might also want to apply a light oil or conditioner before you dive in for extra protection. And use a clarifying shampoo regularly to be sure you’re not leaving any of the drying chemical behind.  (Photo: Getty Images/iStockphoto)

Don’t Shampoo Daily - You may be working up a sweat, but daily shampooing will dry out your strands, so limit it to once a week. If you’ve been in the water or want to clean your scalp after a workout, rinse your hair thoroughly or co-wash it with conditioner.   (Photo: Getty Images)
