Serena Williams Reveals the Weight-Loss Treatment That Changed Everything

The tennis icon opens up about losing 31 pounds with GLP-1 medication, postpartum struggles, and why self-love remains at the center of her journey.

For Serena Williams, the comeback story doesn’t stop at tennis. The 23-time Grand Slam winner is now sharing how she tackled her toughest opponent yet: postpartum weight gain. Her solution? A GLP-1 treatment that helped her lose over 31 pounds while boosting her energy and confidence.

The 43-year-old says her struggle began after welcoming her first daughter, Olympia, in 2017. Even with intense training and healthy eating, her body wouldn’t respond the way it once did. Things got harder after the birth of her second daughter, Adira, in 2023. Williams recalls dropping weight quickly at first, then hitting a frustrating standstill.

“I never was able to get to the weight I needed to be, no matter what I did, no matter how much I trained,” she admitted. “It was crazy because I'd never been in a place like that in my life.”

Looking for a new path, Williams turned to Ro, a direct-to-patient healthcare company where her husband, Alexis Ohanian, also serves as a board member and investor. After researching and consulting with doctors, she began weekly injections earlier this year once she stopped breastfeeding. The decision paid off.

“I lost over 31 pounds using my GLP-1, and I was really excited about that weight loss,” she shared. “I just can do more. I’m more active. My joints don’t hurt as much. I feel like I have a lot of energy.”

Now an ambassador for Ro, the Tennis champion stresses that the treatment didn’t replace her routine but supported it. “GLP-1 helped me enhance everything that I was already doing — eating healthy and working out.”

Even with the changes in her body, Williams says her confidence has always been steady. “Weight loss should never really change your self-image. Women often experience judgment about their bodies at any size, and I’m no stranger to that. So I feel like you should love yourself at any size and any look.”

She makes it a point to share that message with her daughters, teaching them self-acceptance regardless of size. “With me going through what I've went through growing up in public and just having millions of people commenting on my body, it's really important to teach them to be confident at any size, just like I try to be.”

With her daughters watching, a half-marathon on the horizon, and her gym selfies still going strong, Williams says this new chapter is all about strength, energy, and feeling good in her own skin.
