Serena Williams Claims She’d ‘Never’ Shade Drake
While it might’ve looked different at the moment, Serena Williams wasn’t shading Drake during her Super Bowl LIX Apple Music Halftime Show cameo.
The retired professional tennis icon was a special guest of headliner Kendrick Lamar, who also brought out SZA, Mustard, and Samuel L. Jackson. But immediately after the performance, it was speculated that Williams was trolling Drake, whom she briefly dated long before marrying her now-husband, Alexis Ohanian, in 2017.
But Williams has moved on as a wife, mother, and entrepreneur, insisting in a new TIME100 profile that her Super Bowl appearance wasn’t about the five-time Grammy winner.
“Absolutely not,” Williams said on the topic of shading Drizzy during the halftime show. “I would never do that. And that was sad, that anyone would ever think that. I respect how they could.”
She continued, “Obviously I can see how someone would think that. But absolutely not. I have never had negative feelings towards him. We’ve known him for so many years.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Williams claimed that her reason for being involved in the performance was to show Compton pride alongside Kendrick, who is also from the city.
“I'm like, ‘Wait, what, you're asking me?’” Williams recounted the rapper approaching her to be a part of the performance. “I'm not Taylor Swift, let's be honest. I would have a better chance to be quarterback at the Super Bowl than dance.”
She continued, “Who would have thought that a tennis player from Compton would be regarded as one of the best tennis players of all time? It was just putting an exclamation on it.”
The TIME profile was Williams’ second time denying any harm, writing in an X post in February that she was “not dancing to be petty.”
Williams referenced Drake during last year’s ESPYs with a joke about Kendrick’s single “Not Like Us.”
