Deion Sanders Holds Press Conference With Medical Team About His Health Status
For the first time this year, Deion Sanders, aka “Coach Prime,” gave an official update on his lingering health issues.
On Monday (July 28), the Colorado Buffaloes head coach held a press conference accompanied by Dr. Janet Kukreja, Sanders' doctor at the University of Colorado Cancer Center, and revealed that he was diagnosed with bladder cancer. After the removal of a malignant tumor, Sanders is now cancer-free.
“The process wasn’t easy. You have no idea how good God has been to me,” Sanders said, overcome with emotion.
Coach Prime also shed light on the aftereffects of the surgery, saying he "can't pee like I used to pee. It's totally different." He also said he had lost 25 pounds at one point.
“I depend on Depend if you know what I mean. I cannot control my bladder. So I get up to go to the bathroom already 4-5 times a night. And I’m sitting there waking up like my grandson,” he said. “We in the same thing. We got the same problem right now. We’re going through the same trials and tribulations.”
“It’s just totally different and I know there’s a lot of people out there going through what I am going through and dealing with what I am dealing with and let’s stop being ashamed of it and let’s deal with it,” he continued. “And let’s deal with it head-on.”
In an Instagram post on Sunday (July 27), Sanders shared that he wrote a will in May, thinking that he may not live much longer.
"You don’t want to be a fool and leave and not have your business affairs in order," Sanders said, addressing his post.
This year, Sanders has been out of the public eye and away from his team as they prepare for the upcoming season. In a rare appearance, Sanders attended the Big 12 Media Days earlier this month, stating that he was OK, but did not disclose any further details on his health.
“Every day, I’m living good,” Sanders said at the time. “I’m living lovely. God has truly blessed me. Not a care in the world. Not a want or desire in the world.”
Since 2023, Sanders has faced a series of health challenges. In June of that year, he underwent emergency surgery to amputate two of his toes to deal with ongoing blood clots and circulation issues in his legs.
In his third season as Colorado's head coach, the Buffaloes went 9-4 in 2024.
