Malcolm D. Lee on Tyler Perry Criticism: "No Regrets"

The director on the Best Man Holiday and more.

Malcolm D. Lee got his start assisting his cousin Spike Lee on films like Clockers and Malcolm X, and became a Hollywood wunderkind in his own right when he made his directorial debut with 1999's The Best Man. As the film's long-awaited sequel gets ready to hit theaters, Lee reflects back on his groundbreaking film and the timeless characters he created.
Lee talks to us about what it took to get the cast of The Best Man back together for the sequel nearly a decade and a half later, and which one of his characters he identifies with most.
Plus, Lee dishes about his criticism of Tyler Perry, saying he has "no regrets" about saying the Atlanta-based filmmaker is more interested in commerce than art. "His focus has really been about getting a lot of product out there," Lee elaborates. "God bless him. That's how he chooses to [express himself]."
Check out our exclusive interview with Malcolm D. Lee below, and see the Best Man Holiday when it comes to theaters on November 15.
