BET Awards 2026: Mariah the Scientist’s Multiple Nominations Makes This Her Breakout Year

Five first-time nominations prove the Atlanta singer is primed to make R&B history.

Mariah the Scientist once had plans to become a pediatric anesthesiologist. Instead, she dropped out of St. John's University mid-junior year to pursue music.

Fast-forward to 2026, and the BET Awards is giving her five reasons to feel very good about that decision.

The Atlanta-born singer and songwriter, born Mariah Amani Buckles, has something to celebrate. She’s coming to Culture’s Biggest Night as a first-time nominee across five categories: Album of the Year, Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, Best Collaboration, Video of the Year, and Viewers' Choice. That esteemed nomination list makes her the most-nominated R&B artist of the year, tied overall only by Kendrick Lamar with five nods apiece.

It's been a long time coming. Mariah quietly built her fanbase across three studio albums known for raw, almost confessional songwriting on love, loss, and sacrifice. Though last year she had a major breakthrough: "Burning Blue," released in May 2025, became her first top 40 hit, debuting at No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song obviously connected with listeners. The follow-up, "Is It a Crime" with Kali Uchis, landed on the chart simultaneously, which gave Mariah her first-ever dual Hot 100 occupancy as a lead artist.

Then came “Hearts Sold Separately,” her fourth album. It debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Top R&B Albums chart, giving Mariah her first chart-topper. The project earned a 7.7 from Pitchfork

Much of Mariah’s appeal lies in her ability to make vulnerability feel cinematic. Whether she’s detailing heartbreak, toxic love, or emotional detachment, her music feels intensely personal without losing its cool factor.

The BET nominations came shortly after she took home the Rising Star award at Billboard Women in Music in April. This rising star has risen.
