Haiti Breathes Sigh of Relief as Hurricane Irene Passes

First major hurricane of the season leaves no damage in Haiti.\r

As Hurricane Irene has already begun battering the Bahamas and makes its way toward the east coast of the U.S., reports from Haiti show that Irene has given the weather–battered nation a break this time around.
Just days ago, forecasters were warning Haiti to prepare itself for potential disaster. Now, the United Nations reports only isolated damage from flooding and no widespread serious emergencies.
As of today, international and domestic flights are operating in the nation and only one of the more than 160 evacuation sites has been used so far.
Just last year Haiti endured a devastating earthquake that killed more than 200,000 people and displaced 2.3 million others. The country also battled Hurricane Tomas, which caused widespread flooding in November and sparked a cholera epidemic that killed hundreds and infected 20,000.
