2025 NAACP Image Awards: Michael Rainey Jr Earns His First-Ever NAACP Image Award Win

The “Power Book II: Ghost” star is a two-time nominee.

Michael Rainey Jr. earned his first-ever NAACP Image Award at the 56th annual ceremony, hosted by comedian and actor Deon Cole

The “Power Book II: Ghost” star took home the honor with grace, accepting the award from actress Jurnee Smollett and entertainer Chloe Bailey.  The 24-year-old kept his remarks brief, expressing gratitude to his parents. “I’m blessed, and I’m overjoyed,” he said.

Rainey Jr. faced stiff competition in the category, going up against notable talents such as Aldis Hodge (Cross), Donald Glover (Mr. & Mrs. Smith), Harold Perrineau (FROM), and Jabari Banks (Bel-Air).

Best known for his portrayal of Tariq St. Patrick in the Starz hit “Power” spinoff, Rainey Jr. has masterfully brought the character’s transformation to life. In the spinoff, Tariq steps out of his father, James “Ghost” St. Patrick’s shadow, and he is forced to navigate the dangerous world of crime while balancing college and family obligations. Rainey Jr. seamlessly captures his evolution from a rebellious son to a calculating mastermind, blending vulnerability with a cold, strategic edge.

Tonight’s win marks his first NAACP Image Award victory following two nominations.
