Alleged Killer of Spelman Student in Court Today

The 21-year-old tech student accused of murdering a Spelman College sophomore is expected to appear in an Atlanta courtroom this morning.

Devonni Manuel Benton is being held in the Fulton County jail on one count of murder and one count of aggravated assault, Atlanta Police Lt. Keith Meadows told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Benton was arrested Tuesday morning at ITT Technical Institute in Atlanta, where he was studying computer network systems. Police say he fired the shot that killed Jasmine Lynn on Sept. 3. Witnesses say that Benton and his friends were walking near the campus when they got into a fight with a group of Clark Atlanta students, according to Meadows.

He retreated down the street and started firing. We believe he was intending to scare someone," said Meadows, who supervises the homicide division. "We have no reason to believe Ms. Lynn was an intended target.

One of the six shots Benton fired hit Clark Atlanta student Jerome Jones in the wrist, Meadows said, while another struck Lynn in the chest as she walked with a friend on James P. Brawley Drive on CAU’s campus, the Journal-Constitution reports. “The friend heard the gunshots and told her to get down, police said. But his warning came too late.”
