Akeelah Anderson (Keke Palmer) is a gifted 11-year-old with an atypical talent: she has a knack for spelling. After an English professor discovers her acute abilities, he sets her on a path for glory that will hopefully take her to the National Spelling Bee. Along the way she must contend with competing students, her mentor's expectations and her mother's growing concern.
