They're Real: Nike Announces Back to the Future Self-Lacing Shoes Are Coming

Michael J. Fox got the first pair, you can cop yours next spring.

October 21, 2015, is Back to the Future day, and if you don't know what the means, drop everything and go watch the film this minute. Most of us, though, recognize this date as the one Marty McFly put into his time machine when he traveled to the future.
Well, the future is upon us, and of the many tributes to the classic film and it's charming vision of the 21st century, most people's favorite were McFly's dope Nike Mag sneakers — with self-lacing shoes. Turns out, Nike has been working on this technology in a very real way over the years, and broke the news on Back to the Future Day that the Mags are coming!

The first pair was sent, appropriately, to Michael J. Fox, who played Marty McFly in the trilogy and helped turn the shoes into a part of sneaker history. Nike designer Tinker Hatfield, who created the Mags for the film, messengered a pair along with a hand-written letter. "Almost 30 years ago we embarked on a journey to create a glimpse into 'the future,'" wrote Hatfield. "Although the project started as science fiction, we’re now proud to turn that fiction into fact. As the first, most celebrated wearer of the Nike Air Mag, we wanted you to be the first to receive a living pair."
MJF shared a picture of the kicks on Instagram, and then Nike dropped the news that the rest of us (at least, those of us with big bank accounts or unlimited credit) will be able to buy ours in Spring 2016.
