LIVE UPDATES: Ketanji Brown Jackson Senate Confirmation Hearing Day 4

With testimony by the Supreme Court nominee complete, other witnesses will be called to answer questions about their experience with her.

After three days and more than 20 hours of questioning that often became contentious and at others emotional, Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson has finished answering the inquiries of Democrats and Republicans on the Senate Judicial Committee.

On Thursday, the senators will question new witnesses representing groups like the American Bar Association, Leadership Conference on Civil Human Rights, and the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives.

These and other witnesses will make the case of Jackson’s qualification to sit on the bench of the United States highest court.

However, another panel of witnesses, including Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall, and Alessandra Serano, who represents the anti-sex trafficking organization Operation Underground Railroad and pro-life activist Eleanor McCullen, will testify against her.

BET.com will continue with the day's coverage and CBS News will run a livestream of the Senate procedures.

The hearing has concluded.

Final testimony from witnesses to the Senate Judiciary Committee has finished. But not without more controversy as well as praise of Jackson’s judicial record.

Rep. Joyce Beatty, an Ohio Democrat and chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, expounded on how important it would be to have the first Black woman confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

"Judge Jackson's confirmation will send a message to Black women and little girls like my granddaughter Leah, whose mother is the first black woman to serve on the Tenth [Circuit] Court of Appeals, and Leah's first known president was the Black man and now she sees a Black female vice president," she said.

She also called criticisms by Republicans “unfair attacks.”

"Sadly but not surprisingly, Judge Jackson has been the subject of unfair attacks. These bad-faith efforts exist despite a resume that arguably surpasses those of previous nominees," Beatty said. “I remind this body and America just last year, Judge Jackson was confirmed by this body on a bipartisan vote to serve on the D.C. Circuit Court and that she clerked for Justice Breyer, whose very seat she is being considered for.”

The nomination now goes to the Senate for consideration and voting, which is set to take place April 4.

12:45 p.m

Sen. Chuck Schumer, a Democrat of New York said that he would like to fast track Jackson’s confirmation to the Supreme Court. After the hearing, the Senate Judiciary Committee will be obligated to advance the nomination to the full Senate. At that point, Schumer wants to get the nominee onto the bench.

“I will move to have her nomination come to the floor in short order. The Senate is on track to have Judge Jackson confirmed as Justice Jackson by the end of this work period,” Schumer said to the Senate floor.

The U.S. Senate is currently split 50-50 between Democrats, who are widely expected to support her confirmation and Republicans who are widely expected to vote against it. A tie breaking vote would be cast by Vice President Kamala Harris, a Democrat, who serves as president of the Senate.

Panels of witnesses have made statements either in favor of, or criticizing Jackson. The commentaries began with Ann Claire WIlliams, former U.S. District Court Judge and chair of the American Bar Association Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary, who backed the Supreme Court nominee.

She said after a rigorous review of her qualifications by the group, which included her decisionmaking, her standing in the legal profession, and the opinions of others in the field of law and justice, showed that she should be voted onto high court.

“Reflecting the combined views of more than 250 judges attorneys and academics, the Standing Committee concluded that Judge Jackson is well-qualified to serve as an Associate Justice on the Supreme Court,” said Williams.

She then passed the floor to D. Jean Vita, a Washington D.C. attorney and member of the ABA. “Judge Jackson possesses the highest integrity deserving of a well-qualified rating,” she said. “In sum, because Judge Jackson easily satisfies the highest standards of integrity, professional competence and judicial temperament, it is the ABA Standing Committee’s unanimous conclusion that Judge Jackson is well-qualified to serve as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.”

But there were challengers in the opening statements as well. One was Alessandra Serano, a former federal prosecutor and current International Chief Legal Officer with Operation Underground Railroad, which fights child sex trafficking. While not directly backing the senators who criticized Jackson over what they said were light sentences for child sex offenders, she did indirectly criticize her and other judges.

“This trend by certain judges to routinely decrease sentences far below the advisory sentencing guidelines and prosecutors recommendations for CSAM (child sexual abuse material) consumers minimizes the gravity of the offense,” Serano said in a video livestreamed to the Senate committee. “I hope all of the members of this committee agree that there is no cause more noble than protecting our children. Whether some crimes warrant longer prison sentences is a debate left for another day. However, purveyors of CSAM…deserve to be taken out of society for a substantial period of time.”
