Watch Viola Davis Clap Back at Critics: 'Sometimes You Do a Job for the Money!'

The actress gets deep.

Viola Davis is starring as Amanda Waller in the highly anticipated film Suicide Squad, and while this is a major role for the actress, she touches on why some artists may need to make sacrifices that consumers may not understand for various reasons they can't help.

"It's their right to be ciritcal. They are the audience," she said. "But at the same time, I think they don't understand what it is that we do for the most part. They don't understand the process."

The Emmy award winner went on to explain in-depth the trials that most artist — especially artists of color — have to endure regardless of their stature in Hollywood.

"They don't understand the lack of choices or the choices that we make. They don't know the whole back story," she said. "By the time they come to the theatre, they're looking at the end product. They don't understand that sometimes, this is the best you can do with what you've been given. They don't understand the depravation that's involved in the profession. That 95 percent of us are unemployed at any given time, so sometimes, you do a job for the money."

While some may frown at that last sentiment, Davis admits that it's just a matter of survival, sometimes.

"That's completely acceptable, and I think if they knew that, they'd be less critical, if they knew the journey of an artist." she said.
