HBCU Prospects Fight For Draft Recognition At First-Ever Combined NFL Showcase

With no HBCU players invited to the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine, 48 standouts used the league’s latest showcase to make a good impression before the draft.

The NFL's HBCU Showcase arrived in Ashburn, Virginia, this week, turning the Washington Commanders’ training facility into a stage for 48 prospects to make their mark on the professional level. This year’s event broke new ground by merging the HBCU Showcase with the International Player Pathway Pro Day for the first time.

The urgency for such a platform is underscored by recent draft trends. Over the last three years, only two HBCU players were selected in the NFL Draft  The 2026 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis did not include any active HBCU players on its official invite list.  That leaves HBCU talent with undrafted free agency as its primary path to roster spots, making  their performances at localized pro days and showcases critical.

This year’s roster featured 48 prospects representing the MEAC, SWAC, CIAA, and SIAC. Among the standout names were Noah Miles of Howard, Walker Harris of North Carolina Central, Quincy Ivory of Jackson State, and Erick Hunter of Morgan State. The group also featured elite Division II talent, including Virginia Union running back Curtis Allen, the reigning DII Player of the Year.

Hunter emerged as the definitive star of the three-day event. The Morgan State linebacker delivered a performance that rivaled the top defensive prospects at the national combine. Measuring 6-foot-2 and 224 pounds, he posted a 4.48-second 40-yard dash, which would have ranked third among all linebackers in Indianapolis. He also showcased his explosiveness with a 10-foot-10-inch broad jump and a 37-inch vertical.

Other notable performances included Donerio Davenport of Jackson State and Jamal Sam of Benedict, who both recorded a blistering 1.56-second 10-yard split. On the offensive line, Florida A&M's Ashton Grable demonstrated his strength by leading all participants with 28 repetitions on the bench press.

Prospects also engaged in position-specific workouts and had the opportunity for face-to-face interviews with NFL and Canadian Football League personnel. The evaluations from Ashburn will now carry over into the final weeks of the scouting process. All eyes turn toward the 2026 NFL Draft, which is scheduled to take place from April 23 to April 25 in Pittsburgh.
