BET Awards 2026: 8 Sportsman of the Year Nominees, 5 Top Contenders, 1 Trophy
Eight names. Eight cases. And exactly zero easy calls.
The 2026 BET Awards Sportsman of the Year category might be the most stacked field the category has ever seen, spanning three sports and four cities that are riding championship-level waves right now.
The Front-Runner: Jalen Brunson (Basketball)
The defending Sportsman of the Year is putting together the most consequential Knicks season since the Patrick Ewing era. Brunson averaged 26 points and 6.8 assists in the regular season, made All-NBA Second Team, then became a playoff monster with 30.1 points per game as New York punched into the NBA Finals. The King of New York is playing for his second BET trophy and his first ring at the same time.
The People's Champ: Anthony Edwards (Basketball)
Edwards posted a career-best with 28.8 points per game this season and is the most electrifying name in the NBA. Ant is only 24-years-old and already drawing Michael Jordan comparisons for his swag and Kobe Bryant comparisons for his work ethic.
The Résumé: Aaron Judge (Baseball)
In 2025, Aaron Judge became the first player since Mickey Mantle to win a batting title while hitting 50-plus home runs — .331 average, 53 homers, 114 RBI, and a third consecutive AL MVP by unanimous vote. He's doing things that haven't been done in baseball in 70 years. Judge has been nominated for this award every year since 2023. His 2025 season is the most statistically dominant year by any athlete on this entire list. Period.
The Champion: Jalen Hurts (Football)
Super Bowl LIX MVP. Hurts completed 17 of 22 passes for 221 yards, two touchdowns, and a 119.7 passer rating, plus he had the most rushing yards ever by a quarterback in Super Bowl history. He became the fourth Black quarterback to win the Super Bowl, a moment carrying historical weight well beyond the Xs and Os. He's the defending BET Sportsman of the Year winner. He won the championship. That’s a winner right there.
The Legend: LeBron James (Basketball)
At 40 years old in his 23rd NBA season, LeBron finished with 43,440 career points, 12,095 rebounds, and 12,016 assists. He’s the first player in history to reach 12,000 in both categories while holding the all-time scoring record. He holds nine BET Sportsman of the Year wins, the most ever. A tenth would be unprecedented. He can walk into any category he's nominated for and win on legacy alone. Though the big question is: Did he dominate this season? With a sciatica-linked absence at the start and the Lakers falling short in the playoffs, he may have left the door open for one of his stellar fellow nominees.
And we can’t forget about the rest of the nominees. Steph Curry averaged 26.6 points per game in what may be a farewell season for the Warriors dynasty, passing six Hall of Famers on the all-time scoring list. Caleb Williams took a solid sophomore step with the Bears with 2,908 passing yards and 19 touchdowns, but it's too early in his career for this trophy. His nomination is the endorsement. Shedeur Sanders made his NFL debut with the Browns, earned a Pro Bowl nod, and generated real buzz. However, up against G.O.A.T.s, his body of work just isn't there yet.
Who do you think will take home the gold? With a category that’s firing on all cylinders, it really is anyone’s to win.
