'We Are Strongest in the Broken Places': Biden Shares Emotional Message After Cancer Diagnosis

The former president thanks the public for their support following the announcement of aggressive prostate cancer.

Former President Joe Biden has publicly addressed his recent diagnosis of aggressive prostate cancer, expressing gratitude for the outpouring of support and reflecting on the shared human experience of battling illness.

On May 18, 2025, Biden's office announced that the 82-year-old had been diagnosed with prostate cancer characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone. This indicates a highly aggressive form of the disease. However, the cancer is hormone-sensitive, which allows for effective management. The diagnosis followed a routine physical examination that revealed a prostate nodule after Biden experienced increasing urinary symptoms.

In a heartfelt message shared on social media, the following day, Biden posted a photo with his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, and their cat, Willow, writing:

"Cancer touches us all.”

Former Vice President Kamala Harris also supported, saying, "Joe is a fighter — and I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership."

Former President Barack Obama highlighted Biden's longstanding commitment to cancer research, noting, "Michelle and I are thinking of the entire Biden family. Nobody has done more to find breakthrough treatments for cancer in all its forms than Joe, and I am certain he will fight this challenge with his trademark resolve and grace. We pray for a fast and full recovery," Obama noted in posts on social media.”

Biden's diagnosis brings renewed attention to his "Cancer Moonshot" initiative, launched during his vice presidency in 2016 and reignited in 2022, aiming to reduce the cancer death rate by at least 50% over the next 25 years.

As Biden and his family consult with physicians to determine the best course of treatment, the nation watches with hope and support for his recovery.
