Ryan Coogler Lands Historic Film Nomination for ‘Sinners,’ A Rare Recognition for Black Directors
Ryan Coogler is making history in Hollywood yet again!
The Director’s Guild of America announced the nominees for the 78th annual DGA Awards, and the director has been nominated for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film for “Sinners.” This means that Coogler has become the sixth Black director to receive this prestigious nomination in the organization’s 78-year history.
Coogler’s nod is his first in the DGA’s feature-film category. And the nomination places him amongst a small group of Black filmmakers who have been recognized by the guild in the theatrical feature category, including Lee Daniels for “Precious,” Steve McQueen for “12 Years a Slave,” Barry Jenkins for “Moonlight,” Jordan Peele for “Get Out,” and Spike Lee for “BlacKkKlansman.”
Coogler is no stranger to making cinematic history. He is the first Black director with four films grossing over $100 million domestically (“Creed,” “Black Panther,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Sinners”). Coogler’s astronomical success with “Sinners” made him the first to win Best Casting at the Critics Choice Awards, cementing his legacy for impactful storytelling and box office dominance. This is a man who once struggled to afford the screenwriting software he needed, and now he’s literally shifting history with his films.
The DGA’s feature award is closely watched in awards season as winners often align with later Academy Award outcomes. And not to mention, guild recognition is regarded as a major peer honor. While Black directors have been nominated in past years, no Black filmmaker has yet won the DGA’s top feature directing award. Will Coogler be the one to shift Hollywood’s whitewashed history?
Congratulations are in order for the other director nominees in this major category: Paul Thomas Anderson (“One Battle After Another”), Guillermo del Toro (“Frankenstein”), Josh Safdie, (“Marty Supreme”) and Chloé Zhao (“Hamnet”).
