Grammy watchers may still be buzzing about Nicki Minaj’s controversial performance (and ‘Lil Red Riding Hood red-carpet ensemble!) but the Young Money princess is keeping it moving and still reigning supreme on the newsstands. She covers the current issues of New York and Vibe magazines and told both publications that she's over trying to mold her style into one that makes the critics comfortable. Yep, Nicki's bold and unapologetic style is here to stay.
Last season the rapper made a spirited appearance at New York Fashion Week and really turned heads when she got chummy with Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour, but this go round, she’s over it. “I’m not impressed to be in that world,” she told New York of the fashion industry. “I’m in my own world. I think sometimes the fashion world isn’t even about clothes anymore; it’s about this ‘in’ crowd, and I’m not into that.”
She told Vibe
that even though she’s gotten some attention from the fashion powers that be, she has no intentions of toning down her style. “I realized more recently that even if it’s for a fashion magazine, I’m not gonna change who I am,” Nicki said. “When I was doing photo shoots last year, I kept on being told, ‘This is what we want your hair to look like and this is what we want you to look like,’ and it really, really stifled my creativity…I’d been getting more and more frustrated for a while.”
Nicki says she “gets high” off of doing things that other people “don’t have the balls to do” and she’s most comfortable when she’s exploring that, not trying to please everyone else. From now on she only wants to do covers that she feels reflect her personality and that she has a hand in. “The fashion world will have to come to Nicki Minaj, as opposed to Nicki Minaj trying to go to the fashion world,” she told Vibe.
We totally get where she’s coming from, but since she is so experimental, we hope that she doesn’t shy away from trying out new styles, even those that aren’t exactly like the harajuku-style looks we’re used to seeing. (Wasn’t her Glamour shoot last year so refreshing? And they still kept a bit of edge, even though they glammed her up.)

Do you think her style will get played out? Sound off in the comments!
